The first part of the contest is relatively simple: write something. It can be a journal, a stream of consciousness, a scrap of a poem, an idea you've had for ages or one that comes to you in a burst of inspiration.

Maim Your Protagonist Halloween ContestYou create them. You love them. You nurture them. You literarily give them the world as their playground.
And then you put them through hell.
Here at #lacoterie we want to see exactly how rough you can be on your protagonists, and, in honour of Halloween, we're bringing you a contest to do just that.
The Rules

Protagonist must be maimed in course of narrative.
55-1000 words, prose.
No obvious maiming - i.e. legs, arms, heads*.
Maiming must cause some sort of problem for protagonist (i.e. it can be a papercut, but that papercut better do a helluva lot of work to impact the narrative. like. earth-shattering epic papercut).
Protagonist must hate themselves at the end.
There are more ways to cause injury than harming the body.

Incorporate a wedding (in honour of =TwilightPoetess); how you incorporate it is entirely up to you, but it needs to be in there somewhere.

DLD Summer Contest: RESULTS!Apologies for the wait...
We had 59 entries to the Summer Contest. People connected their characters through carnivorous stones, lost hats, curtains, magic shoes and much more. The stories were touching, funny, sad, and outrageous. I want to thank everyone who put in time and effort to make these entries shine. It was extraordinarily difficult for the judges to score and choose just three winners (particularly with one of them having no access to the internet for a month

Community Project: One-Sentence-At-A-Time [CLOSED]

You've all seen these, I am sure. The idea is one person starts a story with a single sentence. Each participant writes a comment that adds another sentence to continue the story. You can leave as many comments as you'd like, but no two can be back to back. Please make sure you read previous comments so you know what general direction the story is headed.

Some ground rules:

The story will be written in third person omniscient which allows us to be in any character's head at any time. But try not to do too much jumping as that gets confusing.

Absolutely stick to the ONE sentence per comment rule. They can be compound sentences.

Let's aim to have this story done by January 5th at 11:59pm Pacific Time. I'll compile all the comments into one

Prosepoetry: A History
In the beginning there was prose and there was poetry. Prose was well-suited for the telling of stories, fiction and non-fiction alike. Similarly, but usually more succinctly, poetry can deal with the same subject matter, but with a wider array of phonetic and aesthetic tools at his or her disposal for the writer. Enter the prosepoem: a composition written as prose but having the concentrated, rhythmic, figurative language characteristic of poetry.
Sometimes a prosepoem is inaccurately described as purple prose, when the two are actually very easily distinguishable from the other.
